The Challenges of Working from Home

COVID-19 has brought about many changes to individuals both professionally and personally, one of the biggest changes is the way we work, it has revolutionised working from home.

Historically many companies have been resistant to allowing their employees to work from home, deeming that people don’t work as hard and can’t be monitored but this has been proven to not be the case in many instances.  For most employers they have found that their employees have taken to home working brilliantly and are producing the same, if not better results.  However, home working doesn’t come without its challenges, one of the biggest is the blurring of lines between work and personal life.

Working from home can be very difficult, naturally the boundaries between work and personal spaces have become blurred and have led to mental health issues among some people. Some people are very happy about working from home as they cut down on travel time and costs, but the travel time is replaced with working time and the result is feeling overworked.  Not to mention the balance of having family around when you are trying to work.  Some people who are working from home are finding themselves more tired and stressed than they have ever been.

Soon, it will be one year since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and people are more than tired of the uncertainty and financial crisis. With the second wave well underway the working from home has no end in sight and the boundaries that were keeping work and home away from each other, now disappeared. One year into this pandemic and people are eager to get back to the ‘normal’ way of living.  People who work from home tend to feel like they are ‘on call’ 24 hours a day.

Some ideas for balancing working from home include:

Have a separate area for work and relaxing if possible.

Make the most of your leisure time, switch off your laptop/mobile phone.

Get out of the house – If you can go out for a walk and get some fresh air it will be beneficial for you.

You need your personal time, take care of yourself and your needs, do some self-care routines and enjoy being by yourself.

Don’t forget to socialize, where possible spend time with your friends and family.

Do the best you can and relax when you have time, when the work time is over, just shut off and walk away.
